PISTOLS

When we hear the word pistol, it can make us think of many exciting things. It can make us think of the Wild West or old-time duels, and pistols draw the attention of many gun enthusiasts.

The word pistol refers to a handgun with the chamber integrated with the gun barrel. However, this is only the official meaning, and it is often used interchangeably with the word gun as well. The word pistol was introduced in around 1570 when the first handguns were produced.  The word has a French root, from the word pistolet, which referred to a small weapon. A pistol can have one or two barrels, and the term is a catch-all term for this style of weapon. 

It is clear that a pistol has been around for a while and is one of the most important types of weapons. The most common pistol type today is the semi-automatic pistol that has several shots and is easy to use.  Before it, pistols had to be reloaded manually and often had only a single shot.  Today, those types of pistols only get used  for re-enactments or for nostalgia. Fully automated pistols are not available for the general population either, as they are more controlled and more dangerous.
